In June I went to Maastricht. This is a small town (in my opinion) situated in the southeast of the Netherlands and is the capital city of the Limburg province.
You may wonder how have I heard about this place. In my faculty and in my course one of the most wanted Erasmus destinations is, you guessed it well, Maastricht. Since it is a very expensive city to live in I didn't applied there but, thanks to Ryanair and its cheap flights, I had the opportunity to go there and I'm glad I went.
Day 1
I flew on June 14th from Porto to Maastricht and it was actually my first time flying in 10 years! It was a very smooth flight. and the it took 2h20m to get there. we arrived at night and me and my friend stayed in this typical local house (I did couch surf - it was my first time and my host was amazing, she even picked us from the airport!). When we got there we were quite hungry so we decided to hit the town to get dome dinner. For our surprise almost everything was closed! So guess where we had dinner... McDonald's!! Thank you globalization, otherwise we would have starved! All the other restaurants and even fast food ones where closed . It was a Sunday night at 10p.m. After that we just walked around for a bit and then went back to the house.
On our way to the city center we went through a park, Stadspark (the main public park in Maastricht, partly 19th century, with remnants of the medieval city walls, a branch of the Jeker river, a mini-zoo and several public sculptures - which I'll show you in the next blog post), which is a great place to run, walk or even to have picnics! I'll leave you with some of the pictures I took on the first day! See you soon!
Love, Cristiana Santos
