When in... Maastricht - day 3 and 4

Hey guys!! How are you doing?? Today I'm writing about my last 2 days in Maastricht. In this days I ended up doing nothing because we had already seen pretty much everything in this small town. On the third day we woke up late and we only went to the Fort St. Pieter. It's one of the most remarkable defense features in Maastricht and its  dated to the beginning of the 18th century. We didn't go inside of it because I only knew that we could go later in the afternoon when I went to the tourist office (that's an advice to you: go to the tourist office and get to know what you can do, what you can visit, etc..), but climbed a mount and the view was breathtaking, I can only imagine the view from the top of the fort.

After our short trip to the fort we went to have lunch with our host. We went to this place were almost every college student went, Cato by Cato is a restaurant that sells take away vegetarian food. It was completely different from what I'm used to and for that it was an amazing experience.

On the rest of the day I just went shopping, once again... I swear it isn't my fault! Everything was on sale... I could I control the shopaholic inside of me??? Besides I was helping the local economy ( Maastricht haul coming soon!).

On our last day in Maastricht I spent the morning on my own so I just started with a walk on the Markt (a square) were there was a little market and what impressed me the most was the flowers! If you don't know, my favorite flowers are peonies (how gossip girl of me) and in Portugal they are freaking expensive and in there they were incredible cheap!! I was so sad that I couldn't buy a bouquet.

When I was in the square I saw this american school bus, which I thought it was pretty cool and, when I was walking around I saw an ad for city tours that were made with those buses and I decided I had to take one! The tour was incredible and I was able to explore parts of the city I hadn't explored yet! I saw the building were the Maastricht Treaty was signed!!

After the tour I went to meet my friend so we could have lunch together and, as always, we had no idea of were to eat.

After a walk, we ended up in a supermarket that had a "restaurant" and we had a hot dog with a special sauce and a coke.

After the lunch we had to kill some time before we go to the airport, so we decided to visit the church that was closed on monday (2nd day). It wasn't anything spetacular, but it was very entertaining and we ran into some portuguese coupla that sat o my side on the plain ride, what was a complete coincidence.

After that we decided to buy something for the fam but we had no idea what so we just bought cheese! I know you must think I'm crazy but I love food and that is the best gift you can give and the cheese was also produce in the area so it was a good souvenir in my opinion (it also tasted very good).

Before heading to the bus stop to go to the airport (we went like 4 hours earlier because we had no idea how long it would take to get to the airport or even if the bus stop was near the airport) I decided to have a snack (airport/plane food is ridiculously expensive) - french fries with mayo, a typical snack.

And after four days away from home, in a different country by myself, it was time to go home. I had a blast and I'm very thankful that I got to meet such incredible people... See you in my next blog post!

When in... Maastricht - Day 2

On our second day in  Maastricht , the day started very foggy and very grey. we first visited one of the most known churches in the city - Sint-Janskerk (it is a protestant church). The sir that was there told us some of his adventures in the World War II, which was very nice of him. He also informed us that we could go up the stairs to the top of the tower - we had to climb 218 very narrow steps (yes, we counted them!!). The view is breathtaking and you can see the entire city (some how the photos I had taken vanished from my camera!!). After the visit to this 14th century building we decided to visit Basilica of Saint Servatius, which is next door to the Sint-Janskerk. Unfortunately it was closed. so we just walked around the city, the street food seemed amazing and I'm very sad I didn't get anything to eat (I was too scared to get a stomach flu). After walking for what looked like forever (30 minutes - I was starving, ok?), we decided to have breakfast in what I would call a supermarket (La Place). I had a rhubarb and strawberry pie and a hot chocolate. Afterwards we decided to cross the bridge (the old one to me more specific; there are like four bridges) and went to the other side of the city. there was a cafe I would have loved to visit, Zondag, but I did not had the chance to go there. If you go there please let me know what you thought about it! We walk all the way to the Maastricht railway station, which was a building that I really wanted to visit (that and to know the ticket prices to Amsterdam - freaking expensive!!). But the building itself was very pretty! I ended up having lunch at McDonald's again! Why?? Because almost everything is closed on Monday. If you plan on visiting Maastricht don't do it on this day!! After lunch we crossed the bridge and went shopping and walked around a little bit more. I bought some things I thought I would never get!! I'll do a haul in another post. After all of the walking we decided to go back home to rest a bit before we went out to have dinner. when we got home our host told us we could use anything she and her housemates had in the kitchen so I decided to cook a very portuguese meal, massa de frango (you can call it chicken pasta) and a baked a cake, quatre quart de bretagne (not portuguese at all). They loved my cooking!!
And then we were so full and so tired that we decided to stay in and ended up watching a movie.

There were bikes everywhere!! They even had traffic lights for bike riders!!

Dogs were so well taken care and they could go inside the stores!!

These are photos from the park I talked about in my last post, it is soooo beautiful and peaceful.

I freaking loved the houses there, I soo want to live there!!
